This is a name that attempts to center The W as "a place of letters." & it's a name that attempts to preserve & amplify the perceptions that some have that The W is Mississippi's Ivy. Whatever that entails.
In the Color Purple, Alice Walker featured the growth of Wisteria as a device to accompany the growth of the main character Celie. She learns make quilts & clothing from wisteria vines. She shares admiration for the plant with a love interest. When I attended the W my third avenue apartment had a wisteria vine growing over the door. It grew in Eudora Welty's family garden; a supposed favorite of her father's. These statements presented as justifications for this name would be strained and hollow. But they're not intended as that. They are merely descriptive of the type of associations of the word. When it bloomed, the windows stayed open.
It is a name that relaxes our white-knuckled grip on finding THE PERFECT NAME, dense with meaning. The fact that it isnt loaded with a strained reference is one of its assets. It's associations are looser. It can breathe a bit. It gives The W does some room to grow in. Wisteria is vigorous, hardy & long-lived. The color "wisteria" blends well with the current brand color pallate of blues grey & white. It has positive cross-cultural associations. To Japan & China, wisteria is associated with sophistication, wisdom, & long life.
The right name captures the imagination & connects with the people you want to meet.
Where does it live on the brand archetypes wheel? Magician, Sage, Lover, Creator. This brand is flexible. The brand treatment featured in the image has a very "Hogswarts-ian" feel to it. Go ahead & laugh, but whenever I teach programming or software engineering to a teenager, I use metaphors from Harry Potter to describe the the different subjects. Programs are spells. Algorithms are Arithmancy. Penetration testing, hacking & networking are "The Dark Arts." It never fails to engage them. The right name captures the imagination & connects with the people you want to reach. Young People. The W campus is very evocative of Hogswarts. This option has the benefit of engaging with that. That's appropriate for a young audience.
